The Dynamic Duo, The V-Dubs Have Arrived
The brother/sister combination of Jack and Reid Van Wagoner have inspired the local surf scene with their competitive spirit and excellent results. They are a force to be reckoned with as they continue to collect event titles while encouraging others to aim for their best.
Mom Marcy and dad Kirk have raised their children to always strive for their personal best and to work hard towards their goals. The results speak for themselves.
Jack was born in 2004 and Reid came along five years later. The two have been active in many sports from an early age, but both agree that surfing has a special place in their lives. As surfers, they excel in both longboarding and shortboarding, which makes them unique on the contest circuit.
Jack and Reid bring so much stoke to everything they do. They are natural leaders, consistently supportive of each other and their teammates.
Meet … Jack
Like everyone in his family, Jack participates in many sports: mountain biking, baseball, skiing, snowboarding. But it is surfing that has captured his heart. Known in surf circles as Jack “V-Dub,” Jack finished his senior year in style, helping to lead Carlsbad High School to the team title, and then taking top honors in the men’s longboard at the Scholastic State Surf Championships event in Ventura.
During the finals heat of the “King of the Pier” event in the 2022 Oceanside Longboard Contest, Jack took a serious hit to the mouth by his board, knocking his teeth awry. As he groggily headed to the beach, his mom Marcy (a registered nurse) quickly assessed the situation and was able to temporarily push his teeth back in place.
Jack headed back to the lineup to finish his heat — and to take the title, edging out Taylor Jensen and other top contenders.
Jack graduated from Carlsbad High School in 2023. “I am attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and focusing on either architecture or engineering. I also hope to make the college surf team.”
Meet … Reid
Reid Van Wagoner is an energetic 14-year-old with a megawatt smile and is a freshman at Carlsbad High School. From skiing to snowboarding to competitive soccer — she does it all. “I am strong, fast, creative, confident, unstoppable.”
It was a big step when Reid opted out of competitive soccer in 2022 and decided to focus on surfing. But the results have been positive — she is currently sponsored by Billabong and other local labels.
While competing in the shortboard event, Reid paused to chat with a young fan at the 2023 SuperGirl Pro in Oceanside. “I can remember when the shoe was on the other foot, and it was ME that was approaching one of my favorite surfers and asking for advice or for an autograph,” said Reid.
