Inspired by the Ocean
Connected by the Waves
It is our playground, our teacher, our source of adventure, and the thread that connects generations across time.
During National Ocean Month, the California Surf Museum celebrates the ocean not only for the waves it provides, but for the rich history, culture, and stories that have emerged from its shores.
Long before surfing became a global phenomenon, Indigenous Polynesian voyagers crossed vast stretches of ocean guided by stars, currents, and an intimate understanding of the sea. In Hawaiʻi, surfing evolved into a revered cultural practice that reflected skill, community, and a deep connection to the natural world. The ocean was not something to conquer—it was something to understand and respect.
As surfing spread across the globe, the ocean continued to shape the people who answered its call. From Hawaiian royalty introducing surfing to new audiences, to California’s pioneering beach communities, to the photographers, filmmakers, artists, shapers, and watermen and women who documented and advanced surf culture, every chapter of surfing history begins at the water’s edge.
The California Surf Museum exists to preserve these stories.
Within our exhibits are tales of innovation and courage, exploration and creativity, triumph and resilience. They remind us that surfing is more than riding waves. It is a way of life, a cultural tradition, and a lifelong connection to the ocean.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary year, we are reminded that the ocean remains the common bond that unites us all.
The same Pacific swells that inspired early surfers continue to roll onto our shores today. The same ocean that connected islands, cultures, and communities continues to bring people together through a shared love of wave riding.
National Ocean Month is a time to reflect on that connection and our responsibility to protect it.
By preserving surfing’s history, celebrating its culture, and fostering appreciation for our coastal environments, we help ensure that future generations can experience the wonder, inspiration, and joy that the ocean has provided for centuries.

Every wave has a history.
Every surfer becomes part of its story.
And every visit to the California Surf Museum helps keep that story alive.
Happy National Ocean Month from the California Surf Museum.
Where surfing’s past, present, and future come together through our enduring connection to the sea.
