Field Trips at the California Surf Museum

Did you know your school group can take an exciting, educational field trip to the California Surf Museum? As a community-centered cultural institution, the California Surf Museum is dedicated to preserving, sharing, and celebrating the culture of surfing while inspiring curiosity, creativity, and connection to the ocean.

Our exhibits bring California’s surf story to life—blending history, science, innovation, and coastal culture in a way that’s engaging, accessible, and fun for students.

Field trips are customized to your group’s grade level, learning goals, and schedule. Sessions last 1 hour for grades K–12 and are typically offered Tuesdays–Fridays starting at 10:00 a.m., with flexible start times based on availability.

COST
Groups of 8 or more receive discounted field trip rates:
• $5 per student
• $7 per adult
• Complimentary admission for school teaching staff
• Title One school students are free

Does my school qualify?

To qualify for the museum’s Title One Field Trip program, you must meet all of the following criteria:

Your elementary school is designated as a Title 1 school by the U.S. Department of Education. You teach first through fifth grade. Your school is within San Diego County.

While we wish we could welcome all students to the Museum at no charge, our funding limits the number of students that can participate. If you do not meet the above criteria you are still welcome to book a field trip with your own transportation and will receive a group admission rate.

Title One Schools

Field trips are free for schools that are Title One designated. Funding for transportation is available for Title One Schools within San Diego County. Reservations are subject to availability due to funding by a grant; free admission is available until allocated funds have been expended.

Field Trip Requirements

MINIMUM SIZE
Field trips are offered for groups of 8 or more students.

MAXIMUM SIZE
The Museum can accommodate groups up to 40 students.

CHAPERONE REQUIREMENTS
• One chaperone required per 5 students for 4th-6th grade;
• One chaperone required per 10 students for 7th-9th grade;
• One chaperone per group for 10th-12th grade.

We ask that you schedule your field trip at least 2 weeks in advance.

Requested Field Trip Dates

Please request dates that are at least two weeks in advance and provide three unique dates and times for your field trip. Note that this request does not guarantee the availability of the dates and times you are selecting. We will respond within two business days after receiving your field trip request to confirm date and time availability. Field trips are only offered during the Museum's normal hours of operation when docents are available: Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm.
The field trip can last up to 45 minutes.
