Surfing in San Diego highlights the county’s rich surfing history, colorful characters, and innovations from 1907 into the late-1960s by featuring more than two hundred vintage photographs culled from CSM archives, family albums, surf photogs, and lost scrapbooks.
This unique book represents the first-ever attempt to organize a pictorial look at the early roots of the region’s surfing history that follows a logical format of time and place. Arranged into geographic chapters stretching from the Tijuana Sloughs north to San Onofre, Surfing in San Diego boasts a hardy list of San Diego’s finest and most unforgettable watermen timelessly captured at the area’s most surfable beaches in many, never-published-before photos. A portion of the proceeds from all book sales will go directly to help support the efforts and exhibits of CSM. BOOK COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK
From Chuck ‘Gunker’ Quinn, Pacifica, CA: “It is the kind of book I will appreciate more and more with each passing day, as I delve deeper into the memories the book evolves, and learn more about the days of my youth which made me who I am today. It shows the history of our lives, times, and friends, which all of us hold so dear.”
From Carl Knox, Carlsbad CA: “It was a very nostalgic trip reading all the names of so many old friends that went almost forgotten. You really did a great job compiling names and photographs of surfing and beach lore. The book is fantastic. I am happy to be a part of it.”
From Cheer Critchlow, Cardiff, CA: “You have been able to rekindle those fantastic memories of people, and places, and boards, and surfspots that I haven’t thought about for years! Now I have something tangible to show my kids, and even more stories spill over as we re-visit that wonderful lifestyle. Great job!”
From Tubesteak Tracy, Malibu: “Just received this wonderful book. They sure did a wonderful job, the pictures are classic. Many thanks!”
Surfer Magazine Book Review, December, 2007 By Alex Wilson “This page is usually reserved for reviewing forms of entertainment that are served in bites that take no longer than two-and-a-half seconds to ingest and meals that take no longer than 40 minutes total. Typically, they’re accompanied by loud punk. Ideally, futuristic surfing is also involved. We get that, and we like it. But sometimes, while we’re all being visually herded headlong into the future, it helps to take a moment to look back. That’s the idea behind Surfing in San Diego. Granted, this book is exactly what it looks like: A collection of ‘50s and ‘60s-era black-and-white photos of people who surfed during a time gone by. And granted, unless you live in San Diego, or happen to be a surf historian, you’re not likely to rush out and pick it up. But that’s not to say useful documentation isn’t contained within. The images themselves, and the captions running alongside, help to fill the patchwork past of our sport. Unless we make an attempt to collect those pieces now – as the California Surf Museum has done with this book – we’ll lose them simply because we were too impatient to take a glance back.”

Encyclopedia of Surfing - Matt Warshaw Matt Warshaws mind-boggling collection of information, personalities, terminology, technology, milestones...3 years in the making. To quote Warshaw; "Surfing, in fact, as it exists in these pages, is only sketched, not defined. I took on this project in part because it seemed as if I already had the spor's measure; that I knew its basic shape and contours the way I know the rooms of my own home. But the boundaries only expanded and the terrain grew more complex and interesting as the book progressed...the subject is so big and rich that only a highly distilled version can fit into 800 pages... "From A to Z, 1,500 entries from the world of surfing, illustrated with over 300 photos. $40.00
